Essays are an integral part of American literature. There are numerous great writers and thought-leaders from America that were infected by major historical events and have shaped our country into the way we know it in the present. The early American essayists were religious leaders and official members, such as judges. They often wrote insightful pieces in the early sermons. Samuel Sewall and Jonathan Edwards and others, for example, have influenced generations of writers and helped define the nation. Numerous other American essayists have played a role in the evolution of the current American writing.
